Midsummer Yoga Retreat with Petri Räisänen 15-24 June 2007 in Swedish Lapland

Frequently asked questions

This looks very interesting, but what is Ashtanga yoga?
Ashtanga yoga is commonly referred to as a physical and dynamic form of yoga. However, ashtanga yoga is much more than excercise to stretch and strengthen the body. Through concious breathing, postures and concentration, it is possible to develop good control of the body and the senses, and to obtain a deeper awareness about one's mind. Yoga gives you firmer and softer muscles, purifies your body from toxins that accumulates there because of an unhealty lifestyle, as well as it improves your immune system and your metabolism. I never tried yoga before, and I'm very stiff. Can I still come to the retreat?
Yes, you can! You don't have to be flexible nor fit to do yoga. There will be a led class for beginners, so you will get all the help you need to get you started.

What is this "Mysore" that you talk about?
The Mysore style of yoga practice is a particular way of teaching yoga. In contrast to led classes, the Mysore style class is silent, the students are practicing their own sequence of asana at their own pace and there are a lot of one on one physical adjustments. One of the advantages with this is that it is for everyone, because it teaches yoga according to one's individual capacity.

I'm not very good at English, is that a problem?
No, not a problem at all. There will be people speaking English, Swedish and Finnish and lots of other languages, that can help you with translations.

What should I bring?
Bring your yoga mat. We suggest you come equipped with comfortable footwear and comfortable clothes. A rain coat can be useful. However, the weather is usually very nice and clear at this time of the year. There is no need to bring your own bed linen.

What about the midnight sun, is it really true that the sun never sets?
Yes. In this part of Sweden, between 12 June and 29 June, the sun never sets. The bright nights and the magical light truly puts time and space in a new dimension...

Isn't it very difficult to fall asleep when the sun shines all night?
Some people find it a bit difficult, yes. If you think this might be a problem for you, you can bring a sleeping mask to cover your eyes when you go to bed. It usually helps.

Will I be able to see the Northern Lights?
Unfortunately, the Aurora Borealis, also called the Northern Lights, are only visible in the winter. It is still there in the summer, but since the sun never sets, it is never dark enough to see this fabuolus wonder of nature.

I don't like mosquitos. How is the mosquito situation in Lapland during midsummer?
No worries, the mosquitos usually show up after midsummer or few days earlier if the summer has been very warm. The big mosquito season will start in the beginning of July. Anyway if the mosquitos bother you, there will be mosquito sprays etc available in the nearest town Råneå. The gnats only come in the autumn, and ticks are very rare in this part of the country.
