Koh Mak
Koh Mak is a relatively small, green paradise island off the eastern Thai seashore, not yet found by mass tourism. More than 2,000 metres of white sandy beaches stretch from the north-west of the island round to the south, parading azure sky, crystal clear blue sea and lazy coconut trees swaying in the wind.
Koh Mak has an area of 16 square kilometres, and is situated about 35 kilometres from the mainland. There is only a few hundred people living on the island. The traditional occupations of the island are agricultural, so most of the land is cultivated as plantations of coconut and para rubber.
There is a little village in the middle of the island, where you will find a health center, a school, football pitch and a few small shops, as well as a couple of simple day spas offering massages and beauty treatments. The main pier of Koh Mak is Ao Nid Pier, east of the island, and not far from there you'll find a Buddhist monk monastery.
There are a dozen or so resorts on the island, mainly clustered on the two main bays, one on the north-west of the island and the other on the south-west.
The best way to explore the island might be to rent a moped (60 Baht / hour or 300 - 500 Baht / day) or bicycle, take an island taxi or simply to walk around - you'll find that most things are within 5-30 minutes walking distance.
Koh Mak is one of Thailand's best kept secrets and ideal for those who yearn for a little peace and quiet, combined with dazzling white beaches, turquoise seas and stunning sunsets.
