Yoga Philosophy, Chanting and Sanskrit
In this workshop, we will explore some of the central philosophies of Yoga, like Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads.
The focus will be on understanding the method of the text -- how the philosophies all fit together -- and on viewing the Indian
thoughts in terms of our ashtanga practice and every-day life.
We will learn how to chant the Sanskrit sutras and shlock's, thus
entering into the mystical, non-intellectual plane of the texts. For this reason, we will learn correct Sanskrit pronunciation,
how to chant mantras and discuss the meaning and purpose of mantras in yoga in general. We will use the general ashtanga mantras
as a practice.
Furthermore, in the context of studying the Yoga philosophy, we will discuss and familiarize ourselves with many
basic terms and concepts which are not always explicitly mentioned in the text but vital for its correct understanding.
The course does not require any previous knowledge of the subjects. Bring your own Yoga Sutras or Bhagavad Gita (not necessary) with
you; any edition is OK as long as it includes the Sanskrit text.
